The event was attended by Cllr Z.D. Nxumalo, Deputy Mayor Cllr Nosisa Jojozi, Speaker Cllr S.D. Mdunge, Chief Whip Cllr N. Mhatu, councillors, executive officials from the Harry Gwala District Municipality and Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, as well as traditional leaders and various stakeholders, including representatives from Agriculture, Health, EDETEA, and the IEC.

The programme commenced with an opening prayer by Pastor D.D. Fodo, followed by welcoming remarks from Cllr M. Cira. Ward Councillor Cllr Lukhakhayi expressed appreciation to the district municipality for intervening in the long-standing water challenges faced by the community. He stated that, after many difficulties, the unity shown by leadership and the community had ensured the success of the project, and he welcomed all attendees to the historic occasion.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Nosisa Jojozi introduced the dignitaries and stakeholders present, while the Municipal Manager introduced the executive management and officials involved in implementing the project. Cllr S.D. Mdunge outlined the purpose of the event, emphasizing that the handover demonstrated the government’s commitment to improving service delivery and extending more development projects to communities.

Traditional leaders, including Inkosi M.B. Mjoli, Headman Z. Bly, and L. Fondo, emphasized the importance of agriculture as a tool for economic growth and poverty alleviation. They highlighted that the district’s intervention would positively impact local residents through improved water access and job opportunities. Inkosi Mjoli commended both the district and local municipality for prioritizing rural development and ensuring that many households would benefit from the scheme.

Representatives from the IEC also encouraged community members to participate in the upcoming elections and exercise their democratic right to vote.

Speaking on behalf of the Mayor of the Umzimkhulu Local Municipality, Speaker Cllr Lukhakhayi praised the district municipality for successfully implementing the project. He further urged residents to refrain from illegal water connections, warning that such actions disrupt the effectiveness and sustainability of the water supply system.

Delivering the keynote address, Cllr Z.D. Nxumalo stated that the project was initiated in 2019 as part of efforts to improve water provision across the municipality. He revealed that, out of 22 wards, 18 already have access to water, while the remaining four wards are expected to benefit through the current project, valued at approximately R78 million. He further stated that the project aims to provide households with direct access to water through installed taps. Cllr Nxumalo emphasized the importance of cooperation between government and communities in protecting infrastructure and ensuring efficient service delivery. Quoting former President Nelson Mandela, he reiterated the vision of a “better life for all” and encouraged residents to use water responsibly and efficiently. He also stressed the importance of prioritizing service delivery in rural communities.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Cllr Mbhele, who thanked both the district municipality and the community for working together to make the Mnqumeni Water Supply Scheme a success. He described the handover as an outstanding achievement that reflects the power of unity and cooperation in improving the lives of communities.
