Innovation must lead in order to Professionalize Local Government - District Mayor Nxumalo

The Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor Cllr. Zamo Nxumalo has asked management of both the district and its local municipalities to be innovative in fast tracking expenditure of Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) to ensure service delivery objectives are met. Mayor Nxumalo said this during a grant session reporting meeting held at the district Council Chambers in IXopo today (13 February 2024).

The district took a resolution to have regular monitoring meetings to report on the Status Quo on MIG and other grants expenditure where the Local Municipal Mayors, Municipal Managers, CFO’s, and Infrastructure Services managers attend in order deal with challenges. This meeting was also attended by Cooperative Governance Traditional Affairs ( Cogta ), officials virtually. Most of the Municipalities have committed to apply turn around strategies to ensure that by end of this financial year there was 100% expenditure on all grants.

“As municipalities we need to be innovative in way we do things, we need to come up with new ways of doing things so that we get the result we want. To Make sure there is service delivery to the people, we must be innovative, we cannot be using old ways which are not giving us the result especially when it comes to MIG. We need to work hard because hard work always pays off. We must always remember that we are here for service delivery, if we fail at that then we not doing our job,” said Mayor Nxumalo. The district and its local Municipalities are already planning for the next financial year which is 2024/2025.
