Kokstad oversight visit left the leadership smiling
The progress on Kempdale Dam Project in Kokstad has brought a smile in the face of the Harry Gwala District Municipality leadership and Management as it has taken off the ground. The Harry Gwala District Mayor, Cllr Zamo Nxumalo, today (20 November 2024), was delighted when he received an update in relation to the almost R 200 million Kempsdale Dam Project, regarded as the “lifetime” end to water challenges in Kokstad. The project will also boost raw water capacity in the dam to meet a projected future demand up to 2040. It will also ensure adequate, safe, reliable and sustainable potable water supply in Kokstad. The Mayor, Cllr Nxumalo was delighted with the update and the pace, which he has however witnesses on site.
This is part of the Municipality’s regular monitoring projects to ensure they get completed with the aim of improving water supply to communities. The site oversight was not strictly dedicated to only projects as the leadership also visited the Kokstad satellite office to motivate the workers and to observe the working conditions.
The walked about 4 km in Horseshoe within the houses monitoring water challenges and to also find solutions. Contractors and consultants were also encouraged to shorten their sleeves. This is the project that was also visited by the then Water and Sanitation Minister, Senzo Mchunu where he turned the sod and gave it blessings since it is the end to water challenges in Kokstad, a fast-growing town in the District of Harry Gwala. The matter of the prepaid water meters, which seeks to become a burning issue was discussed at length that it is for the benefit of the communities and is a permanent solution to non-revenue water.
As part of the site visit, the team started the day Horseshoe Sanitation Project and Refurb / Upgrade of Bhongweni Infrastructure.
