Senior Citizens Golden Games 2025: Harry Gwala District Municipality Celebrates Active Ageing with its senior citizens.
The Senior Citizens Golden Games 2025 held in Ethekwini from the 17- 19th of September 2025 was a resounding success, showcasing the province's commitment to promoting active ageing and the well-being of senior citizens. The event, which drew over 1,520 participants, including 1,320 senior citizens and 200 officials and guests, was a testament to the government's flagship initiative in promoting development, dignity, and the well-being of older persons.
The games provided a platform for senior citizens aged 60 and above to showcase their skills and talents in various sporting codes, including soccer, athletics, and fun events like Ring the Stick, Passing the Ball, and Duck Walk. The Harry Gwala District Municipality dominated the soccer tournament, winning 3-0 against King Cetshwayo, and also excelled in the 800m Men Run for the 70+ category, taking home the top spot.
These Games aimed to encourage older persons to remain physically active, mentally stimulated, and socially engaged. The event's objectives align with the government's commitment to promoting active ageing and ensuring the well-being of senior citizens.

Natal Provincial Sports, Arts, and Culture said, "Senior Citizens have a wealth of knowledge, the elderly are very healthy and active, and these Golden games show us that a healthy lifestyle is one of the greatest medicine for all illnesses”.
The event was a celebration of the contributions and achievements of senior citizens in KwaZulu-Natal. The games demonstrated that age is not a barrier to staying active, engaged, and to be contributing members of society. The event's success highlights the importance of promoting active ageing and providing opportunities for senior citizens to participate in sports and recreational activities.
